    Brungard runs wild in YSU home opener

    YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Youngstown State University Football team earned their first win of the season with a 59-25 victory over Valparaiso in the home opener Saturday.

    Youngstown State jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter but Valparaiso scored 15 unanswered points to cut it to a one-score game.

    But the Penguins were able to hold off the Beacons for good after a 64-yard touchdown run by Ethan Wright, followed by a 66-yard touchdown scamper by quarterback Beau Brungard to pad the lead back up to a 20-point advantage.

    The Springfield product Brungard finished the day with a game-high 195 rushing yards on 10 attempts and three rushing scores while adding 125 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

    The Penguins also saw Da’Shaun Whatley add 38 yards and Ethan Wright with 77 yards and a touchdown as they rushed for more than 429 yards as a team.

    Max Tomczak lead the YSU receiving core with four catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns, which included a 73-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

    The Penguins improve to 1-1 on the season and will host Duquesne at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
