Emmy’s Thrift Shop in Fairhope reopening Saturday after expansion

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — An old thrift shop — that raises money for people in need — is getting a new look.

Emmy’s Thrift Shop is reopening this weekend after a big expansion.

The store’s name is a play on EMI or Ecumenical Ministries Incorporated. All the profits generated from donations go back into their charity efforts.

Contractors are putting the finishing touches on their work — and people at the store are getting things straightened up for this Saturday’s grand reopening.

The thrift store has been closed for three weeks likely leading to pent-up demand.

“Love how much room that we have,” Ecumenical Ministries Incorporated Executive Director Sally Deane said. “I love that we’re able to put out more stuff. It’s clean. It’s new because we are pretty run down. The store is about 30 years old. This was an old hardware store before it was a thrift store.”

They remodeled their old thrift store side of the building and doubled their store space by expanding the thrift store into what was the location of Ecumenical Ministries administrative offices. They’re expecting a big crowd on Saturday as the store finally reopens.

“It’s like a treasure hunt going into a thrift store,” Deane said. “You get good buys. We are recycling. We make sure that we recycle as much stuff as possible. And it is a thrift store. Shopping is a lot of fun.”

She said people like the work the ministry does for the community and the fact that this shop provides for things like the food pantry, home repair and Meals on Wheels.
