PENSACOLA, Fla. ( WKRG ) — Two stormwater projects can now move forward in Pensacola as the city received over $3 million in grant funding.

According to a City of Pensacola news release, the Langley Avenue Drainage Improvements Project and the Main Street Stormwater Improvements Project received funding after being among 197 eligible projects submitted to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for consideration.

In total, $3.35 million was awarded to the two projects from the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Statewide Flooding and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan.

    • The City of Pensacola Langley Avenue Stormwater Adaptation: $2.6 million to address flooding along Langley Avenue as well as multiple locations connecting to Langley Avenue that resulted from the stormwater system being undersized.
    • Phase II of the City of Pensacola Main Street Stormwater Improvements Project: $754,000 to address along W. Main Street between A and G Streets and Garden Street between H and B Streets due to low elevations, deficient pipe capacity and a loss of downstream capacity resulting from tidal flooding.

Officials said that the end goal of both projects is to “mitigate existing flooding problems, design piping, and set tailwater elevation to plan for anticipated sea rise, and improve motorists’ safety by removing standing water in the public right of way.”

In addition to the grant funding, Pensacola officials said in the release that they will supplement the projects that are part of the city-wide Stormwater Master Plan with American Rescue Plan Act funds.
