FAIRHOPE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Fairhope residents are all asking the same question: Where did all of the benches and tables at the pier go?

The Fairhope Pier is one of the most iconic spots in town. It’s a popular place to kick back and relax while sitting on one of the many benches to enjoy the breathtaking views.

Fred Roberts and his wife have lived on the Eastern Shore for 27 years and said they come to the pier multiple times a week to walk their dog, Ike. They said they’ve had some of their best memories sitting on the benches at the pier.

“They’re an invitation to come and visit the park, sit around and meet people, meet strangers from other parts of the world,” Roberts said. “It is very relaxing atmosphere.”

As of Friday evening, all the benches and tables at the pier have been removed. Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan said that moving the benches is all part of preparing to begin the Working Waterfront Project the city has been planning for years now.

The Working Waterfront Project is a $10 million restorative project that is bringing some new updates to the pier. From revamped sea walls and new restrooms to updating the infamous fountain and rose garden, there are plenty of updates coming to the area.

“It’s very challenging when you’re touching the most iconic spot in your town. So we’re a little anxious about that because the traffic flow is changing,” Sullivan said. “People aren’t going to have as much parking when they come down here, but, you know, ask them to be patient. It’s going to be a great project.”

Sullivan said that while they are doing the renovations, people can still use the north end of the park.

The pier will remain open to the public throughout the entire project.

“The benches we’re hoping we will have back within a six to nine-month period,” Sullivan said. “We’re hoping that we’re going to be back open for the Fourth of July.”
