Suspect indicted in death of Memphis man in Antioch

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 24-year-old man was taken into custody in Tipton County in connection with the shooting death of a Memphis man during a robbery attempt earlier this summer.

London Montgomery, 23, was killed around 10 p.m. in the 800 block of Hamilton Crossings off Murfreesboro Pike on Sunday, July 7. He was found in the driver’s seat of a stolen Mercedes SUV after it crashed into a retaining wall. Montgomery had been shot multiple times.

According to investigators, Montgomery arrived in the Mercedes just before 10 p.m. and backed into a parking space next to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. One suspect then got out of the Jeep and got into the Mercedes briefly. A short time later, another suspect got out of the Jeep and approached the Mercedes in what appeared to be a robbery attempt.

As Montgomery began to drive off, one of the suspects shot Montgomery several times. Montgomery drove a short distance before crashing the Mercedes into a retaining wall, according to police. He was taken to a local hospital where he died, while the suspects drove off in the Jeep. Police added the shooting appears to be drug-related.

Rickey Starks, 24, was indicted in connection with Montgomery’s death on Wednesday, July 31. He was taken into custody in Covington and returned to Nashville, where he was booked into the Metro jail Tuesday night and charged with first-degree murder. His bond was set at $500,000.
