DICKSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man has been charged after half a dozen neglected animals were seized and a dog was found dead in Dickson County Thursday.

According to an initial incident report from the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy with Animal Control responded to the 1400 block of Twin Creek Road in Charlotte on Thursday, Aug. 15, with another deputy, two members of the Humane Society of Dickson County, and a veterinarian.

The deputy from Animal Control said he received a call early that morning about a dog hanging from a tree. When authorities arrived, there wasn’t a dog hanging from a tree, but there were reportedly two goats and four dogs—including two severely malnourished dogs—in need of help.

Officials said they spoke with 57-year-old Scott Ray Carter, who gave them permission to walk around the property, which led to the discovery of a dog carcass with a bag around its head.

Per the incident report, the veterinarian said the dogs and goats were not receiving proper care, adding they were starving and dehydrated.

“Perhaps the most gut-wrenching sight was one of the goats, who had part of her hind legs missing. It was clear that these animals had been suffering for quite some time, and immediate action needed to be taken to ensure their safety and well-being,” the humane society wrote on Facebook.

The Animal Control deputy said he wrote Carter a citation for animal cruelty—although the incident report lists the charge against Carter as aggravated animal cruelty—and seized all six animals. They were taken to the shelter, where they will remain until court proceedings are finalized.

The humane society posted on Friday, Aug. 16, the dogs and goats were being examined by a veterinarian to assess their medical needs and determine the best path for recovery.

“We are seeking any assistance possible in caring for these animals during this crucial time, as every little bit helps in providing them with the love and support they need to heal. Your support would be greatly appreciated in helping these innocent creatures on their journey to a better life,” the shelter said in the post, which included a link to make donations .

As of this writing, more than $1,000 has been donated to help with the animals’ care.

No additional details have been released about the circumstances surrounding the animal cruelty case.
