SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — Spring Hill is pushing ahead with plans to ensure they have enough clean water for generations to come.

The city was granted state approval to launch a pilot program for “advanced water purification.” According to the city officials, the project aims to create a blueprint for full-scale, reusable water and sustainability.

“What we’re seeing here is a culmination of these planning efforts,” said Dan Allen, the assistant city administrator for Spring Hill and the project lead. “And really, taking a simple philosophy of, you know what, instead of just looking at what we got to do to get by for the next few years and just figure out the rest later, we flipped that on its head. Now we say, ‘you know what, we’re going to begin with the end in mind.’”

From a small-scale, this multi-year project will look to reuse and create cleaner water from Spring Hill’s share of Duck River. A new reservoir will also be built to help the efforts.

If the city can prove their concept works, they’ll expand from there.

“We’re going to build all of the processes and we’re going to run significant testing using actual effluent from our plants, we’re going to use our real water, we’re going to run it all through these processes, we’re going to sample it, we’re going to test it for well over a year,” Allen explained.

According to Allen, this project is about tackling multiple water-related issues in one fell swoop.

“What if we blended some of these reuse concepts; what if we built a reservoir? How can we address some of these drought issues that we have?”

In the future, improved water sustainability should help Spring Hill residents save money, while also boosting public health.

“A well-planned infrastructure program that carries out over 25 years means that we can adjust rates more incrementally over time. We’re not blowing them out of the water with big huge rate spikes,” said Allen. “We are trying to correct some of the things of the past and really modernize and really prepare Spring Hill to be one of the leading cities in the southeast.”

“Our residents are going to have some of the cleanest, healthiest water to drink for not just this generation, but for their kids and their children’s kids, and carry on,” Allen added.

Construction of the pilot water system is expected to begin in 2025.
