BAY COUNTY, FL. ( WMBB ) – Waller Elementary School students did some last-minute back-to-school preparation at the school’s community day on Saturday.

About 25 organizations were at the school handing out school supplies, treats, and more to students. They received items such as backpacks, crayons, scissors, highlighters, and even hygiene kits.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office also provided free hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, and drinks to attendees.

Waller Elementary School social worker Judy Wade says this event helps students start the school year off on the right foot.

“If you don’t meet someone’s hierarchy of needs, they’re not going to learn in the classroom. We need those basic needs so that they can be effective during the school year,” Wade said.

Wade said this event helps nearly 250 families prepare their students for the school year.
