BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Bay County Sheriff’s Office officials are warning residents about a new scam call that’s circulating in the community.

Scammers are calling people, posing as Bay County Sheriff’s deputies. They claim the person they’re calling missed jury duty and has a warrant out for their arrest. The scammer threatens the victim, saying they have to pay a certain amount of money or they’ll be jailed.

Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said that’s not how arrests work, and anyone receiving these calls should just hang up.

“People need to realize we’re not going to call them to say they missed jury duty and they have a warrant and they can pay us to get out of that, even if that comes from the sheriff’s office main number. They’re able to computer generate that number so it shows up on the caller I.D,” Ford said.

Ford urges residents to call the sheriff’s office if they have any information about the scammers.
