GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — ECU football is set to kick off the season Saturday at home versus Norfolk State at 6 p.m.

The man under center for the Pirates, quarterback Jake Garcia, will be making his first start. He spoke about what this week leading up to the game is like.

Garcia came to ECU out of the transfer portal after leaving Missouri. He also had a stop in Coral Gables, Fla. with Miami. Garcia beat out another transfer for the starting job in Michigan State transfer Katin Houser.

“I was super excited. I was super excited. I walked out of the meeting. I walked in the hallway and I’m like, ‘Let’s go’ and just kind of take a moment and then kind of sat with them for a second and I was like, All right, was next time to call my parents,” Garcia said of finding out he was the starter.
