GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The East Carolina University Injury Prevention is a collaboration between the Brody School of Medicine, Maynard Children’s Hospital and ECU Health Trauma Center.

Together, they have been instrumental in developing and implementing safe practices for children and adults in the community. The injury program has kept the community safe for almost 30 years.

“We actually reached over 86,000 families. That includes children, parents, guardians, grandparents through our safety initiatives and injury prevention efforts,” ECU Health Injury and Prevention Program Coordinator Ellen Walston said. “And that could be anything from poison prevention to child passenger safety to fire safety, water safety.”

Walston said that injury prevention also includes gun safety and suicide prevention, especially during this month which is Suicide Prevention Month. The program partners with groups throughout the community, including Greenville Police, Greenville Traffic Safety Task Force, the Firearm Safety Program and many more.

Collaborative efforts are what separates the program and maintains safety throughout the community.
