    Portage Public Schools to remain closed Thursday after tornado

    PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Portage Public Schools will remain closed Thursday “to allow for continued recovery” after an EF2 tornado tore through the area Tuesday, it says.

    The district was also closed Wednesday.

    In a Wednesday letter , district leaders said no PPS buildings were damaged but cited internet and phone connectivity, road blockages and power outages as challenges.

    “We want to get students back in school as soon as possible where we can restore a sense of normalcy and security as we approach the last several weeks of school,” leaders wrote. “However, safety of our students and staff have to be our top concern.”

    ‘Thought we were gonna die’: Tornado destroys homes, businesses in Portage area

    Tuesday’s tornado destroyed homes and businesses , caused some gas leaks and displaced families. Sixteen to 20 people were injured, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office. None of their injuries were considered life-threatening.

    District leaders said students in International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs would receive more information about their exam schedules.
