GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Grand Rapids has released a draft of its new master plan, which will guide the community’s development for the next 20 years.

The city commission on Tuesday approved the release of the 156-page draft. It’s now available online at grandrapidsmi.gov .

Last updated in 2002, the new master plan has been in the works for years. Officials say it incorporates public engagement and data analysis alike and includes five main goals: great neighborhoods, vital business districts, a strong economy, reliable transportation options and a strong sense of place.

“It is important to recognize that this is a land use plan. Bridge to Our Future is a foundation document and does not operate independently. The Community Master Plan guides the future growth and development of our city,” said Planning Director Kristin Turkelson in a statement.

Now, community members have about two months to review the draft and submit comments to the city.

After the 63-day public comment period, there will be two public hearings, and the city commission is expected to officially vote on the plan on Dec. 3.

Public comment ends Oct. 16. To share your thoughts with the city, you can email planning@grcity.us , fill out an online form or send a letter to the City of Grand Rapids Planning Department at 1120 Monroe Ave. NW, 3rd Floor, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
