WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a father and son were rescued after their canoe took on water on a lake in Walker.

The Walker Police Department said it responded to a report about a missing father and his 11-year-old son on Lake Leota near Millennium Park around 2:40 a.m. Thursday.

The pair went onto the lake in a canoe around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Their family last heard from them around midnight and could not reach them for several hours.

Officers found the father’s vehicle near the lake. The police department used a drone to find the pair and their canoe, according to a news release.

Investigators said the canoe took on water, and the father’s phone was destroyed, so he could not call for help.

Both were returned safely to their family, the release said.
