Adaptive ‘Field Day’ offers new opportunities

CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A national company is looking to make a local impact this weekend for people with limb loss and limb difference.

Hanger Clinic West Michigan is teaming up with Corewell Health and Davenport University to host an adaptive sports event this weekend.

The goal of the Hanger Clinic ‘Field Day’ is to provide people with limb loss, limb difference and other physical disabilities an opportunity to try a new activity in a non-competitive atmosphere.

“We feel like there’s a great mental gain for people as they are able to participate in recreational activities and learning something new,” said Dan Potts, business development director for Hanger Clinic West Michigan.

Potts added that sometimes, people with physical disabilities don’t have the confidence to try something new or get back into a sport they used to participate in prior to an accident or injury.

“You just don’t know what you’re capable of,” Potts said. “There’s barriers out there, but a lot of them are in your head, and come and let us try to help you take steps in the right direction.”

The free event will take place at Davenport University, located at 6191 Kraft Ave. SE , on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It’s open to all ages and experience levels and will feature adaptive golf, rock climbing, seated volleyball, sitting/standing tennis and boccia, along with other games and activities.

In addition, clinical experts will be on site to offer education and support, and there will be an opportunity for participants to meet with peers who are also focused on increasing their mobility while having fun.

In addition to providing free activities for the day, event sponsors will raise awareness and support for the Michigan Victory Games.
