PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Firefighters say a Portage motel fire can likely be traced back to a lint buildup in the dryer vent.

Crews responded around 5:15 p.m. Friday to the Holiday Motel on South Westnedge Avenue, according to a release from the Portage Department of Public Safety.

“The fire originated in the laundry area of the building, where initial investigation shows that likely a lint buildup in the dryer vent ignited, and rapidly spread to the exterior,” the release says.

According to PDPS, the motel manager alerted the fire department and then used a fire extinguisher.

Crews arrived on scene minutes later and worked to put out the fire.

No one was hurt or displaced, but the fire caused some damage to the exterior and started to affect the attic and roof, according to PDPS.

The department reminded homeowners to clean the lint filter with every load of laundry, make sure the dryer vent isn’t blocked and avoid overloading the dryer.

“Dryer lint is highly flammable, and even a small buildup can lead to a fire,” said Battalion Chief Lou Playford in a statement. “We encourage all citizens to regularly clean their dryer’s lint filter and ensure the venting system is clear to avoid this type of incident.”
