Strong storms possible on Tuesday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Hot and muggy weather will feed into a chance of severe thunderstorms as we transition into Tuesday. A disturbance is expected to bring about a few rounds of thunderstorms that primarily will bring a threat of damaging wind gusts. Large hail and heavy downpours may also occur.

SLIGHT RISK

Our chances for thunderstorms begin during the overnight period Monday into Tuesday and there’s a Slight Risk for points near and northwest of Grand Rapids.

Here’s Tuesday’s outlook.

There is some uncertainty surrounding this event. Models have been inconsistent, with some even indicating a dry Tuesday morning in most of West Michigan. One thing is for certain: if storms do occur, they have a high chance of being strong. The warm, moist air in place will serve as fuel.

Some residual energy may carry into Wednesday bringing about one more round of severe weather setting up mainly along and east of US-131 where once again there is a Slight Risk (category 2 out of 5).

TIMING

Two rounds of showers and thunderstorms will be possible Tuesday. The first potential round will arrive during the morning hours and last into the early afternoon. A line of damaging wind gusts will be the main threat. Recent forecast model runs are trending further north likely affecting points between Big Rapids and Traverse City. However, there’s still some variation on the exact placement of these thunderstorms.

Another round is possible late afternoon through the evening hours and this is favored to be focused south of I-96.

More impulses will travel through West Michigan approaching the weekend helping to gradually chip away at the heat and humidity. Things stay unsettled with daily precipitation chances set up through Friday.

As of now it appears the Labor Day weekend will be comfortable with less humidity and lots of sunshine.
