Ohio physician sentenced for $8M+ Medicare fraud scheme
Ankita Singh, MD, a physician in Maumee, Ohio, was sentenced to 26 months in prison for her role in a scheme to defraud Medicare. Dr. Singh participated in a durable medical equipment scheme by signing false orders for orthotic braces that patients never requested or needed, according to a July 19 news release from the Justice Department.
Trenton’s Jay Cormier signs with Toledo Cherokee
On July 19, one local ice hockey player signed a deal to continue his playing career as Jay Cormier inked a contract with the Toledo Cherokee. Cormier finished up his career at Trenton High School on a high note this past winter season, finishing with 11 goals — four of which came in the team’s playoff run to the state finals — and 22 points overall. One of six all-state honorees for Trenton this past year, the Brownstown native and recently-graduated captain finished his Trojan career with 45 points in 84 games played as a defenseman.
Overturned truck closes part of Lagrange Street in north Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio — Crews closed a portion of a north Toledo street Monday afternoon after a truck overturned on the roadway near the Maumee River. Toledo police and a towing company responded to the southern portion of Lagrange Street off of Summit Street before 2:30 p.m. Authorities closed Lagrange between Summit and Water Street.
Teen drivers have opportunity for free training
LIMA — Teen drivers will have an opportunity to practice crash avoidance techniques with a licensed instructor on a closed course at Lima Senior High School on Aug. 7 and 8. These free four-hour sessions are organized by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office and will help teen drivers learn skills like skid recovery and how to deal with an anti-lock braking system.
Lima Police Department investigating body found in wooded area downtown
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Police Department is investigating a body found Monday afternoon. Around 12:30 p.m., police received a report of a body found in a wooded area on the corner of Jackson and Market Street, beside the train tracks. The body had been there for a significant amount of time and appeared to be male. There were no signs of a struggle or clues as to the cause of death where it was found. The deceased individual was sent to the Lucas County Coroner to determine their identity and cause of death, but a report may not be complete for several weeks.
