WOONSOCKET, RI (WPRI) — This week’s Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses Hometown Sports Hero is Adelaide Caron.

The Woonsocket Junior took home Gold in the Hammer Throw at the State and New England Outdoor Track Championships and went even further at the New Balance Nationals, setting a personal best with a winning throw of 182’1, which was 17 feet better than her closest competitor.

“Um, not surprised but I was very happy with it,” Caron said. “I was consistently in the 170’s and I knew it was bound to happen sometime and I was lucky enough to have it at Nationals.”

Caron found the sport as a Freshman, thanks to a little convincing from home.

“So, my Mom and a few other friends were the ones who pushed me to do the sport,” Caron said. “It started with Indoor doing the Weight. I didn’t want to do an Indoor sport, but they pushed me to do it and I fell in love with the sport. So about three years later, here I am.”

“I like how it challenges you; it makes you think differently,” Caron said. “The body control and everything you need to be able to do this sport. It’s just like a challenge.”

Adelaide’s success this Spring has attracted attention from college programs, and she plans to dig deeper into that process over the next few months. The big goal for her Senior year is to make a run at the RIIL State Hammer record of 190’8, which was set in 2019 by Barrington and Princeton University alum Annika Kelly.

“Um, I’ve been talking to a few but I’m still in the mix of looking at different colleges,” Caron said. “There’s a few I have definitely on the top of my list, and we’ll look further into those.”

“I think that’s something we can definitely make a push for, not that it’s something easy,” said Woonsocket Head Coach Marc Piette. “190 feet in high school is quite the feat, only so many people have done it. So, it will be a lot of hard work for her to put in to get to that level, but I think that we have a good opportunity to do so.”
