    Then & Now: Do you know where this is?

    Public parks throughout Worcester have gotten busier in recent days, with their slides, benches and ballfields providing a close-to-home spot for relaxation and recreation.

    There are dozens of parks throughout the city, some grand (Green Hill, Elm) and others best described as quiet neighborhood spots.

    Such a label might be attached to the park shown in this week's Then photo — from 1956. While the park may be off the beaten path, tucked in an area where through-traffic is scarce, its hilltop location provides a grand view of Worcester and beyond.

    Generations of children have spent much of their summer breaks at the park, taking part in pickup football and baseball contests. In the 1950s, a pair of well-positioned trees were used to string up a volleyball net.

    About 20 years ago, the park underwent an ambitious overhaul, with a new play structure and a basketball court added to the offerings.

    Yes, gone is the metal swing set, its six swings once favored by leg-pumping children seeking a heightened view of the city below.
