An Oxford man is facing a motor vehicle manslaughter charge in connection with the death of a 10-year-old child who succumbed to injuries suffered in a multiple-car crash near Gillette Stadium Saturday evening.

State police said Michael Escolas, 42, was traveling at “a high rate of speed,” in a Jeep Grand Cherokee around 8:30 p.m. when he rear-ended a Nissan Altima stopped at a red light near the intersection of Route 1 and Interstate 495.

Escolas was arraigned in Wrentham District Court on Monday afternoon, on charges including motor vehicle manslaughter, drunken driving and larceny of a motor vehicle, among others.

The judge set bail at $100,000 with conditions that include a no-contact order with family members of the victim. He must remain alcohol free and a monitoring device.

Escolas is expected back in court on Sept. 19, for a probable cause hearing.

Police allege that Escolas had stolen the Jeep from a parking lot at Gillette Stadium, where a concert of country singer Kenney Chesney was underway.

The Nissan he crashed into was carrying a family of six — two parents and their four children.

All six suffered serious injuries, state police said, including a 10-year-old who was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

State police said in a statement that three other cars in addition to the Nissan and the Jeep were damaged in the crash.

Escolas was also transported with injuries to an area hospital where he remains in custody, state police said.

The Norfolk County Detective Unit is investigating the crash.

“We offer our condolences to the family for the loss of their child,” the state police wrote in a statement. “Due to the child’s age and out of respect for the family during this difficult time, we will not be releasing their identity.”
