Charleston Resident Zelma Cole will celebrate her 100th birthday this Thursday, May 30! Friends and family gathered Sunday, May 26 to celebrate her big day.

At the celebration, Cole shared part of her secret to a long life.

“Watch television, that’s about all I do. I get out and take a walk every day,” Cole said. “Well, I don’t know the ‘secret,’ I just know that I’m here, and that’s all I know. I didn’t do anything else. I never drank or smoked, you know, so I don’t know if that had anything to do with it or not.

Zelma says her first job was in the news business, working in the Charleston Gazette’s circulation department when she turned 18. After that, she spent 33 years working part-time at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in ticket sales.
