NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — For nearly $900,000, a small historic island off the coast of North Kingstown could be yours.

Rabbit Island, which was gifted to Roger Williams in 1638 by Queen Sachem of the Narragansett Indian Tribe, is officially on the market, according to an online listing .

Queen Sachem offered the founder of Rhode Island the land after he was banished from Massachusetts for his beliefs.

“She gave it to him to raise his goats, as they were causing havoc in her mainland gardens,” the listing notes.

Williams sold the 8.39-acre island, which is situated in Wickford Harbor, and his trading post to Richard Smith in 1651. ( Smith’s homestead still stands in North Kingstown and is considered one of the oldest houses in the state.)

“Since then, the property has remained relatively undisturbed,” the listing explains.

Rabbit Island consists of a central plateau that’s “surrounded by a gently sloping tidal flat that supports salt marshes in sheltered sections and beaches where it faces wind and waves,” according to the listing.

The central plateau boasts a “cathedral like forest” that consists of red oak, gray birch, wild black cherry and sassafras trees. No houses or structures have been built on the island.

“Property like this only comes up for sale once in a lifetime, or maybe never,” the listing states.
