EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — No golfers have set foot on the former Metacomet Country Club’s historic course since it closed nearly four years ago.

But that is expected to change next month, when a new nine-hole golf course officially opens to the public.

“This is a gem that’s been gone for a little while, and now we have it back” said Robert McNeil, an architect with Northeast Golf Company.

Marshall Properties initially purchased the property years ago with the intention of transforming it from a golf course into a shopping plaza and residential apartments .

That proposal didn’t go over well with residents, who argued that the new development would negatively impact their neighborhood.

Marshall Properties went back to the drawing board and decided to restore nearly half of the 18-hole golf course that already existed on the property. The East Providence Waterfront Commission approved the developer’s revised plan last week.

“We believe it’s better than it ever was,” McNeil said.

The new golf course, which will be known as MetLinks, will offer a discount for East Providence residents, according to Lianne Marshall with Marshall Properties. It will also feel very nostalgic to those who visited the course when it was part of Metacomet Country Club.

McNeil explained that the green will feature seven of the holes from the original course, which was designed by architect Donald Ross more than 100 years ago, as well as two new ones.

“It was intentional,” McNeil said. “These Ross golf courses are so wonderfully put together from their origins, and you hate to see them get lost.”

McNeil hopes that residents will appreciate the nod to the golf course’s history in the city.

“I believe it is going to be super special for East Providence residents,” he said.

McNeil said that, while the golf course proper is ready, the developer is still trying to tie up a few loose ends before opening up.

The golf course is just the first phase of Marshall Properties’ plan for the property. The second two phases, which would bring 800 residential housing units and a commercial space to the property, are still in the works and subject to approval by the city.
