BOSTON (WPRI) — Scammers are posing as tolling agencies and texting people, demanding money for unpaid tolls.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is warning people that the unsolicited messages are not actually from EZDriveMA or any other tolling agency.

Customers receiving the messages are apparently being targeted at random. MassDOT emphasized that EZDriveMA will never request payment through a text.

MassDOT said the scam is one of several being investigated by the FBI.

Anyone who thinks they may have received a fraudulent text should file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

If possible, the complaint should include the number the text came from and the website listed within the message. MassDOT also warned not to click on any links.

Anyone who’s looking to find out if they do actually owe money for tolls can call the toll service’s customer service line at (877) 627-7745.
