PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Thousands of DeWALT walk-behind lawn mowers are being recalled because they can malfunction while in use, according to the U.S. Consumer Safety Product Commission (CPSC) .

The DeWALT Battery Push and Self-Propelled walk-behind mowers can fail to shut off or start without a key while in use, posing an injury hazard. It appears the lawn mowers malfunction specifically when water gets into the handle support while the battery is being installed, the CPSC noted.

Stanley Black & Decker has received 10 reports of the lawn mowers failing to shut off. There has also been one report of a lawn mower starting without a key, which resulted in a minor finger laceration.

The lawn mowers were sold at Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware and at other various retailers nationwide between January and July of this year.

The following model numbers are being recalled:

DeWALT Battery 21″ Push walk-behind mowers

• DCMWP234U2
• DCMWP600X2

DeWALT Battery 21″ Self-Propelled walk-behind mowers

• DCMWSP256U2
• DCMWSP650Y2

Lawn mowers bearing date codes between 2023 32-58 and 2024 13-58 are included in the recall, according to the CPSC. Mowers manufactured after March 2024 are not affected.

Anyone who purchased one of the lawn mowers should stop using it, especially if it has gotten wet, and contact DeWALT to schedule a free repair at an authorized service center.
