Hundreds of families swarmed Acrisure Stadium on Monday, receiving a variety of free school supplies and resources as kids prepare to head back to the classroom.

The 12th annual #PittsburghforPPS back-to-school bash kicked off at 11 a.m. Families were able to grab free stuffed bookbags and other school supplies in a drive-thru area set up off of General Robinson. Attendees were also able to attend an in-person event within the Great Hall, receiving services like haircuts and manicures.

The event is sponsored with the help of numerous organizations, including the Steelers, Penguins, Pirates and more. Several local leaders were there to assist, including Pittsburgh’s police chief.

“I feel special just to be appreciated,” said one student recipient. His mom told Channel 11 the event is a “beautiful thing.”

Superintendent Dr. Wayne Walters said there were more than 3,000 book bags for the giveaway.

“When students have the resources and the supplies that they need, they start the school year off right,” he said.

Dr. Walters told Channel 11 that there are several improvements for students this school year. Air conditioning has been improved in certain schools, new translation devices are being offered for ESL students, and there will be general safety and curriculum improvements.

The first day of school for students grades 1-12 is Aug. 26.
