    ORIGINAL COVERAGE

A firefighter was taken to the hospital with burn injuries after working to rescue a woman who was trapped on the second story of a home on Fairview Street in Elrama after it caught fire Friday morning. That woman was also taken to the hospital.

“It’s a tragedy,” said neighbor Dzintra Ullis.

“I heard a bunch of pops and then my phone started going off, I looked out obviously and saw the lights and ran out,” said Leslie Naple, another neighbor.

“I looked out my window and saw their house was completely burning,” Ullis added. “There was fire coming out the top windows.

The fire started around 5 a.m. Friday. Firefighters were on scene just two minutes later. They immediately started to put the fire out.

“It was very intense,” said Elrama Volunteer Fire Chief Lenny Bailey. “When we pulled up there was heavy fire blowing out all the windows.”

The two homeowners and their son made it out of the home safely.

But, a woman was trapped on the second story of the home.

“Firefighters rescued her out of a second floor window via a ground ladder and they got her out of the house,” Bailey said.

The woman – who neighbors say is pregnant – was taken to the hospital once firefighters pulled her from the fire.

A firefighter who rescued her was also taken to the hospital with severe burns.

The home is a total loss, and neighbors are concerned for the family.

“I hope his future daughter-in-law is okay,” Naple said. “I hope.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is working to figure out what exactly caused this fire.
