OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) — Early Sunday morning, an officer-involved shooting at Century Park Apartments in Opelika resulted in the death of an armed suspect.

Tias Dequan Cobb, 25, a resident of Auburn was pronounced on scene in Opelika at 03:08 CT by the Lee County Coroner’s Office. The body of Mr. Cobb will be transported to the ADFS Montgomery Medical Facility for postmortem exam.

Investigators say on August 18 at 3:07 a.m. Opelika Police responded to a report of a suspicious incident at the complex, located in the 1800 block of Century Blvd. Investigators say the responding officer encountered an individual armed with a firearm. An altercation ensued, leading the officer to discharge their weapon, striking the suspect. Despite immediate medical assistance, Cobb died at the scene.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) has taken over the investigation to ensure an independent review of the incident. All evidence, including video footage, has been handed over to SBI. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office, which will present the case to a Lee County Grand Jury.

Opelika Police have deferred all further inquiries to the SBI or the Lee County District Attorney’s Office, while emphasizing their commitment to transparency as the investigation proceeds.

Updates will be provided as more info becomes available.
