Recipients of Academic Achievement Scholarship Cup announced for 2024

COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — Four local high school students are set to receive academic scholarships, according to the office of Georgia State Representative Teddy Reese.

The Academic Achievement Scholarship Cup is typically awarded to two students. This year, Reese has expanded that to four.

Two of the recipients are band members and two are football players. Half are Carver High students and the other half Spencer High.

The recipients are as follows:

• Anthony J. Wilson (Carver, football)
• Hassanah Watson (Carver, band)
• Ben Watson (Spencer, football)
• Jayla Thomas (Spencer, band)

Reese spoke on the significance of the scholarships, saying “younger generations need to know that we are here to fully support all of their efforts.”

“It has long been clear that higher education provides a greater opportunity to be successful in life,” Reese added. “It is our hope this scholarship will help along that route in shaping the awardee’s future.”

The rewards will be presented at the start of halftime for the Spencer-Carver Football game on Friday, Aug. 23 at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.
