MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Last season, the Houston Mustangs were the last year standing after defeating three-time defending TSSAA 6A champions Oakland 24-9 to win the school’s first-ever state championship.

” It was awesome. it was a proud moment for me being an alumnus and then seeing these guys reach their dreams last year,” said Houston’s head coach James Taylor.

What the Mustangs accomplished last year will not be forgotten anytime soon. Still, last season’s successes are in the past, and adding another title to the trophy case is the only motivation needed heading into the 2024-25 season.

” It’s the biggest question I’ve been asked, so these guys don’t run from that. The motto for this year is to ‘repeat the feat’ and that’s what we’re going to try to do,” added Thomas.

Houston lost key players like running back Damon Sisa to graduation, but they return a veteran core on both sides of the ball led by senior quarterback Chandler Day who threw for 2,479 yards and 34 touchdowns.

” We’ve always just tried to keep a level head because we want to be able to do it again so we want to make sure we do the right things and make sure we do the things we’re supposed to do to make that happen,” said Day.

The Mustangs kick off the season on August 23rd at home against Briarcrest.
