MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The superintendent of Arlington Community Schools has stepped down following the news of a cancer diagnosis.

Superintendent Jeff Mayo announced on Wednesday that he will be stepping back from his duties until further notice to prioritize his health and recovery.

“With the support of his family and loved ones, Mr. Mayo continues to aggressively battle the disease. As both board members and citizens of Arlington, as well as friends of Mr. Mayo, our thoughts and prayers are with him as he focuses on his recovery,” said Scott Benjamin, ACS Board Chairman, in a statement.

The ACS Board appointed Dr. Allison Clark as the temporary superintendent to fill the vacancy.

Dr. Clark first started working with ACS in 2010 as the principal of Arlington Middle School. In 2020, she began serving as the Chief of Human Resources.

“Throughout her time with ACS, Dr. Clark has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to the success of our students and staff, and her experience at both the school and district levels ensures she understands the needs of our school community,” Benjamin said.

Jeff Mayo was named the superintendent of ACS by a unanimous vote by the Board of Education in 2020. He is the second superintendent in the history of ACS, according to the school district’s website.

His tenure with ACS began in 2014 when he served as Chief of Staff after Arlington residents created their municipal district.

“Please join us in welcoming Dr. Clark into this role and in keeping Mr. Mayo in your thoughts and prayers as he fights to come home,” Benjamin said.
