MEMPHIS, Tenn. — High school football is back in play but while some may be taking the stands many Memphians are saying they are staying home.

Whether it’s rooting for your favorite player, band, or cheerleader, the football game is the place many would usually want to be on Friday night.

But some Memphians are saying they are not excited about high school football this year.

MSCS offers more pay to keep school officers from striking

“They be getting shot up, you see what I’m saying. It usually be people fighting, a whole brawl,” said a big sister of a Central student. “My little brother goes to Central. He doesn’t play football but I be going to their games and stuff. It be lit.”

Last season, Booker T. Washington High School experienced a brawl that ended with pepper spray being deployed.

Cordova High School had gunshots fired during one of their football games.

But school districts are strictly enforcing safety this sports season. So, you don’t have to fumble and miss your favorite team’s football game.

“I’m repping Whitehaven. Let’s go! I want to see everybody show support for the high schools. It’s going to be good this season,” said Zee, a Memphis resident.

Memphis Shelby County Schools posted the following reminder on their Facebook page reminding attendees of the rules,

    • Everyone will have to walk through a metal detector.
    • All items including bags will be inspected.
    • No re-entry is allowed and all bags must be clear.

Kick-off starts at 7 p.m. for most high school football teams.
