POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Looking to experience a whole other side of nature? Rangers at Powhatan State Park will lead a walk Thursday evening that will give participants the unique opportunity to hear owl calls.

The event will be hosted from 8:15 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, with guests meeting at Shelter 3 in the park near Canoe Launch A.

Guests will take a walk and practice identifying the unique calls of three different species of owls and learn about their adaptations as night-time predators.

The walk will be up to one mile long, with frequent stops to listen for owl calls.

Attendees are asked to bring a flashlight or headlamp with a red light setting or red cellophane covering to prevent disrupting nocturnal animals and preserve the group’s night vision.

There is no fee for the event, but guests must pay the standard parking fee at the gate.

Can’t attend on this date? The park offers may other dates, with one each month through October .
