UPDATE: Victims of deadly Augusta County train collision identified by VSP

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police (VSP) is investigating a deadly crash involving a train and a passenger van that claimed the lives of three people and injured another person on Monday night.

The deadly crash took place on Wayne Avenue at an intersection between the train tracks and a private road.

According to VSP, a 15-seat van occupied by four people was heading from a solar panel work site in Stuarts Draft when it was hit on the driver’s side by a Norfolk Southern train. Police said the initial call came through at approximately 8:08 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12.

State police confirmed two male passengers and one female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene at 8:13 p.m. by the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad. Another female passenger was taken to Augusta Health for treatment.

After VSP interviewed the train’s conductor and engineer, it was determined that the train did not appear to be exceeding its normal speed at the time of the crash.

The names of the victims will not be released until next of kin is contacted. The crash is still under investigation by Virginia State Police.
