CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources operates permit-fee fishing areas to provide year-round trout fishing.

Trout are generally considered cool water species, and many bodies of water in Virginia can not sustain them during warm summer months. However, waterways in permit fishing areas are cool enough to provide a trout fishery for 12 months of the year.

There are three trout permit fisheries in the commonwealth:

    • Crooked Creek Wildlife Management Area
    • Clinch Mountain Management Area
    • Douthat State Park

A daily permit is required to fish in any of those areas. The cost is $8.00 a day. Rainbow, Brown, Brook, and Tiger Trout are all available depending on the body of water.

Jerry Hall, with the Limit Six Trout Team, says the Crooked Creek area gives you the potential to catch a Virginia Trout Slam; a brown, a rainbow, and a brook all caught on the same day.

“It’s a great summer opportunity place to catch trout,” said Hall.
