What's behind the name of this New Hanover beach town? Hint: It's not the Wright brothers.

Wrightsville Beach is one of three New Hanover County beach towns.

But how did this community get its name?

For starters, it didn't come from the Wright brothers, who had success on another North Carolina beach in 1903 with the first engine-powered, heavier-than-air flight.

The town bears the name of Joshua Grainger Wright, a judge who lived and worked in Wilmington in the late 19th century. He built a private residence, his "summer place" on the sound (known now as Wrightsville Sound), which was a good horse-and-buggy ride from Wilmington, as a place to escape the bustle of life.

Although it was also known as Ocean View Beach, in 1899 it was incorporated as Wrightsville Beach.
