Community activist, founder of 'Cease Fire Indy' Ron Gee killed in shooting

INDIANAPOLIS — One of the city's most prominent community activists, Ron Gee, has died, according to multiple fellow community leaders and friends.

Gee was shot and killed at a Citgo gas station located at 38th Street and Arlington Avenue on Thursday following a disturbance.

In October 2022, Gee told WRTV that he called Indianapolis home for as long as he could remember. He ran a nonprofit called Cease Fire Indy that works to create positive change within the community.

Gee also owned 1313 Eatery on the city's east side.

In November 2023, WRTV again talked to Gee after a fire closed 1313 Eatery .

Gee was previously shot around Christmas in 2018.

According to IMPD, the shooting happened just before 11 a.m. at the gas station. Fellow community leaders and friends of Gee tell WRTV the person found fatally shot at the gas station was Gee.

Indianapolis City-County Councilor Keith Graves (District 9) released the following statement:

Earlier today, our city lost a prominent community leader, mentor, friend, and brother, Ron Gee. Ron has been like a little brother to me ever since I met him when I first became a City-County Councilor, and like many of us in our community, I am heartbroken. He was well-respected and loved by so many, and I am devastated that he died from the very violence he dedicated his life to fighting against. Ron wanted better for our community. May we all commit ourselves to carrying Ron’s legacy of service, peace, and justice. Let us work together to create the peaceful community Ron worked every day to create.

My heart goes out to Ron’s family, friends, and our entire city during this difficult time.

U.S. Rep. André Carson, D-Indianapolis, released the following statement regarding Gee's death:

Ron Gee didn’t just preach peace and respect – he lived it. He worked to stop gun violence and comfort grieving victims in a way only he could. His death is a massive loss to our community. I’m thinking of Ron Gee’s friends, family, and the countless families he helped.

IMPD has not taken a suspect in custody, nor has anyone been detained regarding this case.
