RIDGELAND, S.C. (WSAV) – Leading up to Veterans Day, Operation Forward Operating Base has been burning a fire for 22 days straight, signifying the average amount of veterans that take their lives every day.

As the 22-day fire comes to an end, it will transition into a fire that burns in memory of all veterans who lost their lives on the battlefield.

“It’s a day to give back to families that have given it all. So think about that. Think about their daughters and sons. ” said Major General James Livingston of Mcrae, Georgia.

He was awarded a Medal of Honor in 1968, for his heroic actions in the Vietnam War.

Livingston says that veterans of all ages deserve support, regardless of how long ago they served

“Your mission is not only the young people that are getting out. It is everybody’s that served. And that’s a big job taking care of all of them.” said Livingston.

Operation Forward Operating Base is a group that organizes activities to engage and connect veterans and first responders throughout the community.

“I think what makes the fob is a special community. Many of the people we run into are thankful and appreciative of our service. As we blend these veterans into the community, its important to get them together.” said Mcnamara.

Mcnamara is a former Marine Corps Infantry Officer, he says a community like this is exactly what he needed after returning from active service.

“I was one of those guys who was hesitant to come, but you never know what you need. It gets people excited to come with us and learn our stories,” said Mcnamara.

Although Operation Fob has organized some special events throughout the month of Memorial Day, it doesn’t stop after tomorrow. They say they are dedicated to supporting veterans and their families year-round.
