    Assault on Mount Mitchell begins in downtown Spartanburg

    SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Assault on Mount Mitchell began early Monday morning in downtown Spartanburg.

    It kicked off at 6:30 a.m.

    It is nearly a 103-mile ride from downtown Spartanburg to the top of Mount Mitchell in North Carolina.

    The total climb is 11,000 feet going up and down the mountain.

    Some cyclists are competing in the assault on Mount Marion, which ends just short of the climb to the top of Mount Mitchell.
