PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – An investigation is underway after a man was shot to death Sunday night at a Pickens County home.

The Pickens County Coroner’s Office confirmed that a man is dead after agencies responded to a home on Crowe Creek Road around 9:30 p.m.

The victim, identified as 49-year-old Steven Lee Basquette, was found inside the home with at least one gunshot wound.

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said Basquette and the homeowner had a child in common.

According to investigators, Basquette had been arrested in July on charges of domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature involving the homeowner and another man. He was later released on bond.

The sheriff’s office said the shooting Sunday began as a confrontation between Basquette and the victims from the July case.

Investigators said, based on statements and other evidence, Basquette began assaulting the man before the woman shot him because she was in fear for their lives.

No arrests have been made at this time.

The investigation in the shooting remains ongoing.
