PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Sirens sounded near the Oconee Nuclear Station early Tuesday morning.

According to Pickens County officials, Duke Energy received information that some emergency sirens were inadvertently activated around 8 a.m. in the 10-mile planning zone of the nuclear station.

A representative with Duke Energy said during a planned silent communication test, some of the sirens unexpectedly sounded.

They have said there is no emergency and the plant is operating safely.

If you ever hear sirens and are unsure of the cause, officials advise tuning to a local radio or TV station in your area.

Duke Energy is working with state emergency management to determine to cause of the siren. Stay connected with 7NEWS on-air and online as more information becomes available.
