CLEMSON, S.C. (WSPA) — The Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) is warning about scams targeting people who are looking to buy football tickets.

“As we begin a new football season, we’ve had an uptick in people who are scamming people out of tickets for football games,” Lt. Cortney Wright said. “We have victims all across the state that are coming in and making these purchases.”

According to CUPD, scammers are advertising tickets on social media sites, such as GroupMe and Instagram.

“Usually, they’re requesting money be paid through Apple Pay, Venmo or something like that,” Wright said. “When people try to claim those tickets, they find out they’re not actual tickets.”

Police said scammers then delete their accounts after receiving the money. The scam could cost people hundreds of dollars.

To avoid being scammed, Lt. Wright said people should never send money for tickets over Apple Pay, Zelle, Venmo or other payment apps.

“IPTAY and Ticketmaster are the primary vendors for tickets,” Wright said. “But always, if you’re going to purchase a ticket, make sure that you know the vendor or person from whom you’re making these purchases.”

If a person is scammed, they are encouraged to report it to their local police or sheriff’s department.
