BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A papermill in Blair County is being torn down after the facility has been in use for 117 years.

Roaring Spring is officially saying goodbye to the Appvion papermill which closed in 2021. 300 people lost their jobs when it closed. Being founded in 1866, the papermill was part of the community being one of the largest employers in the area.

The Roaring Spring Borough Council heard a proposal in February 2023 for potential projects once the site is clear. However, a decision hasn’t been made for the site so far.

    PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

The proposal involved potential upgrades for the Spring Cove School District that included a new sports complex with a football and soccer field. The complex would allow for better accommodations for fans.

A second phase of the proposal would also include a privately owned amphitheater. The proposed construction plans for the site would not include taxpayer dollars.
