BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Much like spring, construction season is here. On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 9 officials began outreach sessions to highlight more than 80 projects anticipated to be under construction in 2024 in the Laurel Highlands region.

The first outreach session was for projects in Bedford County. District 9 also covers Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon and Somerset counties.

“For county officials, there’s a lot of planning that goes into knowing where detours are and knowing where construction projects are going to start and finish. It helps everyone ease the burden of traffic delays and detours,” Jay Knarr, Transportation Community Relations Coordinator for PennDOT District 9, said.

In a recent press release, PennDOT said that Governor Shapiro’s 2023-24 budget secured $125 million to fully leverage federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Investment and improve Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges.

For 2024, in Bedford County, there are 15 anticipated seal coat projects for the roadways and 20 construction projects.

“These projects, and others across Pennsylvania, are an investment to not only improve travel across the state but also benefit the communities that rely on these transportation links,” PennDOT District 9 Executive Vince Greenland said.

The 2024 construction season for District 9 will include:

    • Approximately 149 miles of paving
    • Approximately 79 bridges that will be repaired or replaced
    • Approximately 375 miles of roadway will be seal coated

There will be additional outreach sessions for Huntingdon and Blair Counties on April 11 and April 18 in Somerset and Cambria.
