(WTAJ) — As teachers and students gear up for the new school year, the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) is doing the same to promote school safety.

PSP Troop A, which covers Cambria, Indiana, Somerset and Westmoreland counties, will begin conducting numerous domestic security checks of public and private schools in their region. This will include things such as walking the halls and having lunch visits with students.

In addition to the security checks, troopers will be following busses this year, specifically during morning pick-ups and afternoon drop-offs.

Drivers are reminded that overtaking a bus with red lights flashing and a stop sign extended can result in a $250 fine, a 60-day suspension of your license, and 5 points on your driving record.

“The safety of our students and schools is a community effort and we would like to wish all of the students, teachers, school administrators, coaches, and school staff members a safe, healthy, and successful school year.”

Troopers also want to remind students and parents of the Safe2Say Something program in PA. According to the Office of the Attorney General, over 80,000 tips have been reported to the program since its inception in 2019.
