Altoona back-to-school cookout combines food and punches

ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) – An unusual back-to-school cookout, including the chance to learn how to throw punches, will be held Saturday afternoon.

The cookout event – hosted by Scorchin’ Gym in Altoona – will offer community members free food, games, prizes, a boxing demonstration, and even a session teaching locals how to throw punches.

The cookout will be held at Scorchin’ Gym at 2900 Beale Ave in Altoona.

Organizers are also hosting a Friday Night Laughs event on Friday, Aug. 23 at 9 p.m. Friday Night Laughs will feature Peggy O’Leary and Dell Gold, with host Will Wright, at the Altoona Grand Hotel.

“We got a comedy show, so for the parents, come out to laugh and have fun too, because I know ya’ll (are) happy that they’re going back to school,” Jeremiah Witherspoon, owner of Scorchin’ Gym, said.

Entry to watch Friday Night Laughs will cost $30 at the door, and $20 in advance. Community members can purchase tickets at Executive Barberz at the Logan Valley Mall or by calling 814-201-2524, or 814-660-4928.

The cookout is free, but any donations will go to the non-profit organization, Leaders of Tomorrow.
