(WTAJ) —You may be too busy in the morning to think too much about your regular cup of coffee, but do you know whether or not caffeine is in your decaf cup at all?

Or how about what SOS stands for? Let’s take a look at some questions you might think that you know the answer to.

    What does SOS stand for?

Now you might think this is an easy question, but you probably got it wrong. Despite most people thinking that it means “save our souls” or “save our ship” it actually is neither. Although in present-day it may be used to mean that, it was never meant to be an anagram. SOS is simply the Morse code distress signal .

In Morse code SOS is, …—… , it’s not even technically letters as it’s supposed to be just a continuous Morse code string that all runs together. The first recorded use of SOS was in 1909 when a ship broke down off the coast of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina.

Are zebras black with white stripes or white with black stripes?

You might think the question is arbitrary, but there is actually an arguably right answer. Zebra’s are known for their distinct striped pattern which starts to develop at the eighth-month mark in embryonic development. Baby zebras’ are born with dark brown streaks that turn black as they age. However, a zebra actually has melanin which makes its skin black and the fur pattern is created by lack of melanin which causes white stripes in its fur.

Therefore, a zebra is black with white stripes !

There have been a couple of theories as to why zebras’ have stripes with some thinking that it works as a type of camouflage or that it confuses predators, however, the most promising theory is that the pattern serves as protection from biting flies . Despite living in areas with dense populations of flies zebras are not often targeted by flies which also helps to prevent them from getting any diseases that the insects may be carrying.

In other interesting zebra news, did you know that there are actually three species of zebra ? There are Plains zebras, Mountain zebras and the Grévy’s zebras. You’re probably most familiar with the Plains species as it has the biggest population and it’s the one most often depicted.

Is decaf coffee void of caffeine?

Nearly 3 in 4 Americans drink coffee every day and 36% drink between three to five cups every day. So whether you prefer black or with lots of sugar and cream, that’s still a lot of Joe! That being said the statistic shows that regular coffee is a fan favorite with only 16% of people drinking decaf coffee .

Despite the name, decaffeinated, is decaf coffee really devoid of all caffeination? The answer? It’s NOT 100% devoid of all caffeine. The beans that are used for decaf coffee go through a process called decaffeination. That process removes about 97% of caffeine . So the typical decaf cup only has about 2 mg in it.

Regular coffee drinkers say that caffeine enhances alertness, concentration, and mood, which may explain why the majority of coffee drinkers opt for the caffeinated version. However, decaf offers those who want the taste, but not the energy boost as an alternative option.
