NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Summer Friday nights can sometimes spell trouble for kids, but a program called “Friday Night Lights” is giving some in New Haven plenty to do.

On Friday night, at the Floyd Little Athletic Center, nearly 500 kids turned out for a night full of activities. Between several basketball games taking place, a DJ, a nail and eyebrow station and haircuts, there were options for everyone.

The best part? All of it is free for children between the ages of 13 and 20.

Deputy Director of the New Haven Youth and Recreation Department Ron Huggins says the goal is to keep kids out of trouble, off the streets and safe.

“That’s the reality,” Huggins said. “Kids are looking to have fun and be safe, and enjoy each other’s company. The proof is in the pudding.”

Huggins added that each time they hold the event, the number of participants grows and it has been well received by the community.

Tyson Watson, of New Haven, said he was there to be with his friends.

“I want to play basketball and spend some time with people, see who is here and just have fun” Watson said.

Along with the city’s Youth and Recreation department, the New Haven Police Athletic League also helps run the program.

At the event, both uniformed and plain clothes police make a point to interact with the kids and help build bonds with them. Parents are also part of the night and are encouraged to attend.

“We’re dressed down a little bit more so they get to see us in another light so we kind of build that relationship with school resource officers as well,” Sgt. Ron Ferrante said.

“Friday Night Lights” will be held every other Friday night until school starts in September.
