WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WTNH) — Multiple agencies responded to a chemical fire at a FedEx shipping center Wednesday morning, Windsor Locks fire officials said.

Officials said they began dealing with 5,000 pounds of two different chemical agents that spilled in a 40-foot tractor-trailer loading dock at around 7:15 a.m., making it a “major” hazmat situation at 130 Old County Circle.

Crews with DEEP determined that nitric acid had spilled. They stopped the leak, and a permitted environmental contractor was on the scene to clean the spill.

The scene was still active at 11 a.m., and officials said this type of incident is “extremely time-consuming” and requires many emergency personnel from across the state.

As of 10:50 a.m., the road reopened to traffic and businesses were allowed to reopen.

Due to the need for many staff on scene, police said officers from other jurisdictions may be seen in town temporarily.
